National Cat Day

National Cat Day

Mark your calendars: October 29th is National Cat Day! Kitties are wonderful pets and companions! Our feline friends have been warming our laps and pouncing on our toes for thousands of years, and definitely deserve their own day. Read on as a Fox Chapel, PA vet offers some great ideas for how to pamper your cat on her special day.

Beds

We all know what Fluffy’s favorite pastime is: napping! Offer your drowsy furball lots of comfy beds to snuggle up in. Store-bought beds are great, but your sleepy pet will probably be just as happy with a soft, folded up blanket in a box or wicker basket.

Treats

Another way to activate your furball’s little engine is to offer her a yummy treat. A can of plain tuna in water will do nicely. Fluffy can also enjoy some shredded deli meat; cat milk; or cooked, boneless meat, fish, or poultry, without the skin or fat. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Toys

Toys are very beneficial for your feline friend. Batting that little catnip mouse around will help Fluffy get off the couch and moving, which is great for her physically. Playing also offers your pet beneficial mental stimulation: your furball has to really think to time those tricky jump-pounce-meow combinations just right! Pick up a few new toys for your kitty to push under the couch.

Brushing

Fluffy may spend hours each day carefully grooming herself, and keeping that pretty fur soft and shiny. That doesn’t mean that she won’t appreciate a helping hand, however. Brushing your cat regularly will get the dead fur out of her coat, which will reduce the amount of furballs she gets. Spend some time brushing your feline pal.

Kitty Garden

Why not make Fluffy her own kitty garden? Some good plants to include are Spider plants, Moth orchids, Money Tree plants, and rubber trees. You can find more great options at the ASPCA website.

DIY Cat Furniture

You may be surprised at how many great ideas for DIY pet furniture you can find online. Make your feline buddy a kitty tipi or pet tent. Or, if you’re up to a bit more of a challenge, make her a cat tower!
