Adventures With Fido

Adventures With Fido

Are you going on some fun adventures this summer? Your canine pal would no doubt be delighted to accompany you. Fido loves exploring! Just be sure to put your pet’s safety first. A Fox Chapel, PA vet offers tips for taking your pooch out and about in this article.

Training

All dogs should know basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. These are very important, both for petiquette and safety. The command to Stay can keep your pup from running off, while teaching Fido to Come can help you stop him from approaching wild animals or dangerous areas.

Leash

Fido should always be leashed when you take him off your property, unless of course you are in a fenced area. Retractable leashes can be great, but they aren’t right for every situation. For instance, we don’t recommend using them on the sides of roads. If the mechanism breaks, your furry friend could run into traffic. Dog parks are another place where you may be better off with a regular leash. You don’t want your canine buddy getting tangled up with another pooch!

Preventative Care

Make sure Fido sees the vet regularly. Your pup should also be current on his exams, vaccinations, and parasite control products.

Activity

Be careful not to overexert Fido, especially in the heat. If you want to take your pet hiking, take time to build his endurance slowly.

ID

Fido should be microchipped and wearing ID tags at all times. Keep copies of your furry pal’s paperwork with you, just in case you need it. One easy way to do this is to put copies in your glove box. You can also take pictures of them with your phone, so they are in your gallery.

Water

Dogs can get thirsty very quickly when they’re out and about. Always bring water along for Fido. You may want to keep doggy dishes in your car. Another option is to get collapsible plastic dishes. A doggy water bottle with a dispenser is also a good choice.

Courtesy

Always pick up after your canine friend! Stash extra waste baggies in your car. That way, no matter where you go, you’ll always have some with you.
