How to Freshen Up a Cat Tower

Has your cat stopped using her kitty tower? Cat towers are great for our feline friends, but Fluffy does sometimes lose interest in her furniture. We can help! Here, a Fox Chapel, PA vet offers tips on freshening up a cat tower.

Clean It

Over time, cat towers collect lots of dirt, dander, and dead fur. This can make them a bit itchy and uncomfortable for Fluffy. Fleas can also be an issue. Give the tower a good cleaning. A good hand-held vacuum or steamer can come in really handy here!

Recover It

Many cat towers are covered with carpet, which will only hold up for so long under constant attacks from kitties’ sharp little claws. Recovering a cat tower with fresh carpet is a quick and easy way to give it new life, and make it look just like new! You can use sisal rope for the base.

Stabilize it

Does your kitty’s tower wobble when she jumps on it? This may make Fluffy uneasy, and could be the reason she isn’t using it. You may need to level out and stabilize the base a bit. For a quick fix, try putting furniture pads under it.

Offer Access

As cats age, it become harder for them to jump and climb. If the lowest level of Fluffy’s tower is a good distance off the floor, she may not be able to reach it. Get pet ramps or stairs, move the tower next to a desk or chair your kitty can use as steps, or put a shorter kitty tower beside it.

Move It

Cats are very curious, and love to investigate anything new. Even moving your kitty’s tower to a different spot may cause her to become curious and interested in it again. If possible, put it before a window with a good view of a yard or busy street. That way, Fluffy can relax and watch birds and squirrels.

Other Options

If none of the above options work, there are a few things you can try to make the tower more appealing for your kitty. Sprinkle catnip on and around it, and put some fun toys nearby. If all else fails, tell Fluffy to stay off it. That might actually work!
