Keeping Fluffy Fit

Keeping Fluffy Fit

Is your feline friend getting a bit chubby? Obesity is a huge problem with our furry patients! Although pudgy pets are adorable, your kitty will be much healthier if she stays at or near her ideal weight. Of course, you probably won’t have a lot of luck getting Fluffy to do laps around the kitchen. It’s also probably safe to say your furball will only get onto a treadmill if she wants to nap on it. How do you keep a cat in shape? A Fox Chapel, PA vet offers some tips in this article.

Offer your kitty lots of fun toys to pounce on. Catnip mice are fine. Fluffy may enjoy batting a ball around as well. You can even try some fun modern toys, like automated laser pointers, robotic mice, or mechanical “swimming” fish. Then again, your pet may ignore these things, and play with a bottlecap instead. Cats are nothing if not quirky!

Take time to play with Fluffy every day. Even just a few minutes of chasing that pesky red dot will benefit your feline buddy! Use toys that you can control, like a laser pointer, wand toy, or a remote-controlled snake.

Cats often instinctively run after things. Toss a crumpled-up piece of paper down the hall for Fluffy to run after. Every little bit helps!

Kitty Furniture

Get your furry pal some furniture that encourages her to jump and climb. Cat towers are great for this! You can also give Fluffy a catwalk, kitty shelves, or a fun feline activity center.

While not every cat is going to enjoy being walked, some furballs really do like it. It does give kitties a safe way to get some fresh air and enjoy the Great Outdoors. You’ll need to start by getting Fluffy used to wearing her harness indoors. Then, attach a leash. Supervise your pet closely when she has her leash on: you don’t want her getting stuck in something! If all goes well, give it a try!

Your cat’s diet will play a huge role in her overall weight. Even giving Fluffy just ten calories too many every day can cause her to pack on pounds. Follow your vet’s nutritional recommendations, including serving sizes and suitable snacks.
