Adopt a Shelter Dog

Adopt a Shelter Dog

October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! It’s always heartwarming to see sweet, homeless dogs getting a new lease on life. In this article from River Valley Veterinary Hospital, serving the Fox Chapel, PA area, a local vet discusses adopting shelter dogs.

Benefits of Going To A Shelter

There are some great benefits to getting your canine companion from a shelter. For one thing, you’ll be giving one fortunate pup a second chance. You’ll also save money. Plus, you’ll be promoting great animal welfare! The money you spend on Fido’s adoption fees will help the shelter provide food, shelter, and care to their other furry charges.

Finding Your Canine Buddy

Shelters have dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds, and colors. Of course, it isn’t unusual for people to go to a shelter looking for one type of dog, only to randomly fall in love with a mutt that doesn’t fit the description at all. Sometimes it only takes one look at a furry face to know you’ve found the right pet! It’s also important to spend time with your canine friend before finalizing things. Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment, so it’s important to make sure you’ve picked the right pooch.

Getting Ready

Before you bring your furry friend home, you’ll need to do some shopping. Fido will need food, toys, treats, bedding, dishes, grooming supplies, a leash and collar, waste baggies, and a crate or carrier. If you have a yard for your pup to chase squirrels around in, check your fencing to be sure it’s secure. We recommend getting a self-latching gate as well.

Coming Home

Fido may sleep a lot at first. Being in a shelter is very scary, and he may need time to recuperate. Give your canine pal as much time as he needs to settle in. You’ll want to schedule a thorough veterinary exam, but otherwise, just focus on getting to know your furry buddy. Toys, treats, walks, and playtime will help you earn your dog’s trust.

Spread The Word

Even if you aren’t ready to adopt another dog right now, you can still spread awareness about this great cause. You can also help by volunteering, fostering, or donating goods or money. Even sharing posts on social media will help!
