5 Steps to Keep Your Pet Healthy Throughout 2019

5 Steps to Keep Your Pet Healthy Throughout 2019

Happy New Year! In 2019, make a resolution to keep your pet’s health in the best condition possible. Preventative medicine is the best way to do that! Here, a Fox Chapel, PA veterinarian tells you about five easy steps to keep your pet healthy all year round.

Great Diet and Regular Exercise

One of the simplest preventative healthcare steps is feeding your companion a great diet—when your pet gets all the right nutrients through a high-quality food, the whole body stays healthy. Couple a great diet with regular exercise in the form of walks and/or play sessions with a favorite toy, and you have a recipe for great health all year!

If your pet hasn’t already received their core vaccines at a young age, it’s time to act. Dangerous diseases like parvovirus, distemper, influenza, hepatitis, Lyme disease, calicivirus, rabies, and many more are just waiting to harm your animal companion. The best line of defense against these diseases is proper vaccination! Talk to your vet today if your pet is in need of essential vaccines.

Pest Control

Few things can sideline a pet’s health quicker than a pest infestation. Worms, fleas, ticks, disease-carrying mosquitoes… it’s important that your pet is protected all year round! Talk to your veterinarian if your animal companion isn’t already set up on a quality heartworm medication and a flea-and-tick preventative; most pets will be well-protected with these two measures.

Dental Care

Dental health issues are some of the most common problems that veterinarians see amongst domesticated dogs and cats. In 2019, don’t let your pet’s dental care fall by the wayside! Brush your pet’s teeth at home using a pet toothbrush and a feline- or canine-formulated toothpaste; provide plenty of chew toys or dental sticks to freshen the breath and remove loose plaque from the teeth. Last but not least, consider scheduling a veterinary dental cleaning at the vet’s office—it’s a great way to revitalize your pet’s entire mouth!

Veterinary Appointments

Remember: when your veterinarian examines your pet on a regular basis, their health can be monitored properly. Any health issues will be caught early, allowing for prompt and proper treatment.
